We just found a puppy and a 5 year old girl, shivering and alone in the cold rain after a storm in Texas. Just looking into their eyes breaks my heart. Thankfully, the girl and the dog are safe. – tammy <>DHN

In the aftermath of a violent storm that swept across parts of southeast Texas this weekend, emergency crews have been combing neighborhoods and rural areas for stranded residents. But no one expected the discovery that stopped even seasoned rescuers in their tracks.

Early Sunday morning, search-and-rescue volunteer Sarah Thompson was surveying a flood-damaged road near the outskirts of Houston when she spotted movement in the ditch just beyond the guardrail. What she found has now become a symbol of hope — and heartbreak.

“There, huddled under a piece of torn sheet metal, were a tiny puppy and a little girl,” Thompson recalled, voice trembling. “They were soaked to the bone, shaking, silent. Just looking into their eyes… it broke something in me.”

The child, later identified as 5-year-old Ava Martinez, was barefoot, bruised, and clutching a small brown puppy tightly against her chest. Authorities believe the pair had been stranded outside for several hours as wind and cold rain battered the area during the night.

Neither had identification. The puppy, just a few weeks old, had no collar. Ava was too cold and frightened to speak at first. But once wrapped in a blanket and placed in the back of an emergency vehicle, she finally whispered, “I didn’t want to leave him.”

Emergency crews quickly transported both to a nearby shelter. Ava was evaluated and treated for mild hypothermia, while the puppy — now affectionately named “Stormy” — is being cared for by local veterinarians.

“She never let go of him,” said paramedic Jamie Lott, who helped with the rescue. “That puppy was her warmth, her comfort, her lifeline. I think they kept each other alive.”

Authorities are still investigating how Ava and Stormy ended up alone in such conditions. Preliminary reports suggest their home may have been damaged in the storm, but no further details have been released. Child Protective Services and local police are working to contact Ava’s family, while she remains in safe custody.

In the hours since the story broke, photos of the pair — bundled together, eyes wide and weary — have gone viral. Thousands across the country have reached out, offering support, donations, and even adoption inquiries.

A GoFundMe page has since been launched to support Ava and Stormy’s care, already surpassing its initial goal within hours. Social media users are calling them “the storm survivors,” “tiny warriors,” and “a bond stronger than the storm.”

As the skies clear over Texas, Ava and Stormy are recovering — together. For now, they remain side by side in a foster home, where they are warm, safe, and deeply loved.
