When Mariska Hargitay learned that nearly 50 percent of domestic violence survivors delayed leaving abusive situations because they couldn’t bring their pets, she was deeply moved.
“That fifty percent of survivors have to choose between their own safety and the safety of their pet is just untenable,” the Law & Order: SVU star told PEOPLE.
Partnering for Change
To address this issue, Hargitay partnered with the Purple Leash Project, a joint initiative between Purina and RedRover that aims to make more domestic violence shelters pet-friendly.
“For survivors after being physically hurt, the number one affliction is isolation,” she explained.
“And the idea of supporting a survivor’s healing with their animal, that they could heal together was just so beautiful to me.”
As the founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, Hargitay has long been an advocate for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.
Her latest efforts extend that mission to protecting the bond between survivors and their pets.

“Courageous Together” in Times Square
On May 6, Hargitay unveiled “Courageous Together,” a statue by artist Kristen Visbal, best known for New York City’s iconic Fearless Girl.
Installed in Times Square, the sculpture depicts a woman and her dog connected by a purple leash, symbolizing the courageous first step forward they take together.
“The work is elegant, powerful, and strong,” Hargitay said.
“It has a way of starting a conversation, with this woman taking the courageous step forward with her beloved pet, who looks at her like, ‘I got you, I’m with you. No matter what.’”
The statue will travel across the country, including an appearance at the 2024 Westminster Dog Show.

Healing at Home
Hargitay’s advocacy is also personal. A devoted pet owner herself, she shares her home with her dog Kaia and cat Karma.
She often sees the profound ways animals provide unconditional love and support.
“Sometimes, even if I’m sad or have had a hard day, I can feel Kaia’s watchful, empathetic, compassionate, protective gaze,” she shared.

A Call to Action
The actress is encouraging others to learn more about the Purple Leash Project and to spark conversations about domestic violence.
“Don’t be afraid to talk about it and start a community – and listen,” she said.
“Because when somebody bears witness to you, that is just a huge piece of their healing.”
Through her voice and advocacy, Mariska Hargitay is helping ensure survivors never have to choose between their safety and the pets who give them strength.
